PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure reliability of a chain tensioner without impairing reliability of a variable valve timing mechanism, in a variable valve timing device for an engine, equipped with the hydraulic variable valve timing mechanism, a hydraulic control valve, the hydraulic chain tensioner, and an oil path. SOLUTION: The variable valve timing device for an engine, comprises; the variable valve timing mechanism; the hydraulic control valve; the oil path; a chain abnormality detecting device detecting an abnormal state of a chain; and a control device controlling the hydraulic control valve. When an abnormal state of the chain is determined by the chain abnormality detecting device, a memory part of the control device stores information on the abnormal state, and a flag becomes 1. In the case where the flag is 1 and it is determined that a starter is in an ON state, the control device controls a duty ratio of the hydraulic control valve to become 0% to close the hydraulic control valve.
