A hybrid process for coating a substrate (3) by the thermal application of a coating with a process stream (2) comprises determining the relative amount of vapor and/or condensed vapor for the coating material (23) transported in the process stream by a diagnostic measuring process (D), adjusting the controllable parameters with the obtained measuring data (65) w.r.t theoretical values, and regulating the production of the coating, especially a multiple layer system (4).
