PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an influence on image data caused due to variation in the temporal change of light quantity distribution in a main scan direction of a light source and to reduce an influence on compensated image data caused due to the dirt of a concentration reference member, etc. SOLUTION: This image reader is constituted of: a reading means for reading an image of an original by feeding the original to a prescribed reading position; a shading compensation board arranged outside a reading area for reading the original; and a platen roller arranged on the prescribed reading position. The image reader detects the dirt of the platen roller by reading the platen roller on the prescribed reading position by the reading means before reading the image of the original by the reading means and selects one of a plurality of compensation means for compensating the temporal variation of the light source according to a detection result of the dirt.
