PURPOSE: An apparatus for exchanging a gift certificate for money and a controlling method thereof are provided to exchange easily the gift certificate for paper money or coins by improving a total structure. CONSTITUTION: A gift certificate insertion hole, a display unit(5), a reset button(6a), a confirmation button(6b) are formed on an upper end of a front side of a case. A paper money discharge hole and a coin discharge hole are formed on a lower end of the front side of the case. A gift certificate identifier(9) is installed in the inside of the case in order to identify a face value of the gift certificate. A main control circuit(8) is formed in the inside of the case in order to perform a control operation for outputting the sum of face values to the display unit or discharge paper money and coins corresponding to the sum of the face values. A paper money discharge member(11,12) is used for counting sheets of paper money and discharge paper money. A coin discharge member(13) is used for counting coins within a hopper and discharging coins.
