A small-scale assembly processes water that is impure as a consequence of prior use as drinking water or a household process. The assembly consists of a bioreactor (5) and a permeate tank (8). The bioreactor (5) is linked by a pipes to the septic tank (1) into which it discharges water, and draws feedback sludge. The septic tank has ceramic filter membranes (4) which discharge by pipe to the permeate tank (8). The ceramic filter membranes have a pore size of about 10-6 m. The membranes are cleaned by back flushing from the permeate tank. The bioreactor has a substrate with a microbiological culture bed or starter cartridge (3) and is made of inert plastic. The reactor has a removable cover and a side-fitted maintenance hatch A disinfecting unit (9, 10) is located between the permeate tank (9) and supply point.
