The application related to an inflatable curtain module, a compact tethering system and a method of restraining an occupant. A cushion (18) is provided with a tether (54) having a first end (60), a second end (62) and an intermediate portion (64). The first end (60) is attached to the cushion in a lower portion (68) thereof, and the second end (62) is attached to the first end (60) or the cushion (18). The curtain module further comprises a lower anchor (89) slidable retaining the intermediate portion (64). The lower anchor (89) may be configured as a locking mechanism. The tethering system may comprise a tensioning ring (256) encircling a loop portion of the tether (54). The aim is to exert tension on the cushion (18) when deployed.
