PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for controlling a solid state electronic imaging element such as a CCD whereby the CCD outputs all of stored signal electric charges even when the amount of the electric charges is small. SOLUTION: When the luminance of an object is low in a state that imaging is carried out by a film with an ISO sensitivity equivalent to the ISO 1600, a level of an output gate pulse given to an output gate 5 is controlled to lower the level of a potential barrier existing at an output terminal of a horizontal transfer path.
