PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods for manufacturing a novel copolymer for use with a hole transport layer for an organic electroluminescent element, for manufacturing an organic electroluminescent element excellent in adhesion between the positive electrode and the hole transport layer and capable of generating a high-intensity emission upon application of a low voltage, and for manufacturing a hole transport layer for an organic electroluminescent element excellent in adhesion with the positive electrode and capable of generating a high-intensity emission upon application of a low voltage. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element has a hole transport layer having a copolymer comprising a monomeric unit having, in its structure, an electron-donating N,N-aryl substituted amino group or a group, or the like, containing the amino group, and a monomeric unit containing at least one functional group. The hole transfer layer and the positive electrode surface are covalently bonded with each other by using a coupling agent having a functional group capable of covalent bonding with the copolymer. The thus-acquired organic electroluminescent element is excellent in thickness accuracy and in surface flatness, has a hole transfer layer less in film thickness, and is capable of generating a high-intensity emission upon application of a low voltage.
