PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an organic electroluminescent element having excellent drive stability by using a specific compound in a hole inhibition layer in a thin film type device with which an electric field is applied to a luminescent layer composed of an organic compound to emit light. SOLUTION: The compound is represented by general formula (I) (X is an n-functional connecting group and is bonded to a carbon atom or nitrogen atom for forming any one benzene ring in a phenanthridinone skeleton; n is 2 or 3).
