PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicular shock absorber using a MR fluid, achieving improved durability and high-speed saturated damping property by improving the wear resistance of a sealing portion. SOLUTION: The vehicular shock absorber using the MR fluid as operating fluid allows a change in damping force by applying a magnetic field to the MR fluid. It comprises a main cylinder storing non-MR fluid as operating fluid, a main piston with a built-in sub-cylinder storing the MR fluid as the operating fluid, to be slidably inserted into the main cylinder, a sub-piston to be slidably inserted into the sub-cylinder, and a piston rod holding a sub-piston, arranged coaxially with the main piston and the sub-piston and slidably held on the main cylinder and the sub-cylinder. The friction resistance of a sliding surface is designed so that, when the piston rod is pushed into the main cylinder, the sub-piston is first slid and then the main piston is slid.
