PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a support base for a magnetic recording medium, in which gas barrier layers are arranged on a surface of polyester film furnished with excellent slit nature as well as excellent dimensional stability. SOLUTION: This support base for the magnetic recording medium consists of the polyester film and the gas barrier layers arranged on both surfaces of it and is characterized in that a Young's modulus in the longitudinal direction is≥8 GPa, a Young's modulus in the width direction is≥6 GPa and a Young's modulus in the longitudinal direction is larger than that in the width direction by≥1 GPa, and the thickness of each gas barrier layer is within 1 to 5.0% of the thickness of the polyester film as reference, and also a magnetic layer is arranged on one side surface.
