<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine and a method for operating the internal combustion engine capable of reducing exhaust emission at engine start very well. <P>SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine 1 is combined with motor/generators MG1 and MG2 to construct a hybrid power unit, and generates power by burning mixture of fuel and air in each combustion chamber 2. The internal combustion engine 1 is provided with an exhaust manifold 5 making exhaust gas from the each combustion chamber 2 flow therein and an electric air pump AP for supplying secondary air to the exhaust manifold 5.
