A process for the preparation of liquid hydrocarbons and a clean gas stream suitable as feed and/or fuel gas from synthesis gas involving the following steps: (i) catalytically converting the synthesis gas at elevated temperature and pressure into liquid hydrocarbons; (ii) separating product stream obtained in step (i) into a light product stream having at least carbon dioxide, unconverted synthesis gas, light hydrocarbons, oxygenates and inerts and a heavy product stream having mainly normally liquid and normally solid hydrocarbons; and (iii) separating at least carbon dioxide from the light product stream obtained by means of a physical absorption process using a liquid absorbent, preferably a continuous, regenerative absorption process.
