A process for the production of acetic acid is disclosed, which involves oxidation of ethane with molecular oxygen in a fluidised bed of catalyst particles, wherein the particle diameter of at least 70% of the catalyst particles have diameter 80 mm or less, the density of the catalyst particle used in the fluidised bed reactor is in the range of 500 kg/m3 to 6000 kg/m3, the fluidised bed index is greater or equal to 1 and the gas volume flow is selected so that the gas bubble diameter of the reaction gas mixture fed in the fluidised bed reactor is less than 12 cm.
