PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method for a hydrogen production apparatus whereby the reaction of a hydrocarbon and steam is made possible in a relatively short time after operation starting and the purification of high-purity hydrogen can be efficiently performed. SOLUTION: The hydrogen production apparatus has a reformer 4 for reacting raw materials consisting of a hydrocarbon and steam at a high temperature to reform the materials into a hydrogen-rich gas, a converter 5 for converting carbon monoxide in the hydrogen-rich gas supplied from the reformer 4 into carbon dioxide, and a hydrogen purification device 7 for purifying the hydrogen-rich gas supplied from the converter 5 to give high-purity hydrogen. The apparatus is constructed so that after a gas for operation starting is introduced into the apparatus and the starting operation for raising the temperature is performed while the gas is being circulated, a hydrocarbon being a raw material is introduced into the apparatus.
