<p>A discharge unit is disposed at the downstream end part of the main carrying passage of a multi-function machine and the discharge unit is provided with a shifter mechanism. By altering the sheet passing position for a photosensitive drum at the time of surface printing and rear surface printing using the shifter function, the area of the photosensitive drum where the surface potential increases is limited thus reducing a foggy area. When second and subsequent sheets are recorded, the recording sheet can be controlled so as not to touch a foggy area on the photosensitive drum even if a micro shift takes place in the carrying position of the recording sheet and defective printing can be prevented.</p>
