PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a programmable light signal processor capable of reducing the electric power consumption of a heater down to requisite minimum and a method for controlling the programmable light signal processor.

SOLUTION: All of the sets of 2N+1 set values of such a phase controller 4 by which desired characteristics are obtainable are calculated by a CPU circuit 16 for control and the set of the set values at which the total phase shift set quantity is minimized is selected from the sets of the calculated set values of the phase controller 4 and control is so performed as to execute the phase control based on the group of selected default setting.
