PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processor in which a character or a drawing can be made explicitly obvious while effectively utilizing the high gradations of a photograph or a picture. SOLUTION: It is decided whether or not an arithmetic value SS resulting from applying Laplacian filtering processing to the concerned pixel of a gradation value Px and its peripheral pixels is equal to or higher than a predetermined character limit threshold Th1, and it is decided whether or not the arithmetic value SS is equal to or higher than a predetermined halftone limit threshold Th2 and is lower than the predetermined character limit threshold Th1. It is then decided whether or not an added value A of the gradation value Px of the concerned pixel and the arithmetic value SS is located within a predetermined range around the concerned pixel and the number of pixels of which the gradation value is lower than a predetermined threshold Th3 exceeds a predetermined number K, and on the basis of the decision, predetermined edge enhancing processing is applied to the concerned pixel.
