摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the memory quantity required to decode the encoded image data in which reversibly encoded data and non-reversibly encoded data are mingled. <P>SOLUTION: It is determined whether or not JPEG encoding should be performed for each pixel block of image data (S1405). If it is determined that run length encoding is performed, the process goes on to step S1409. Also, when it is determined that JPEG encoding should be performed, the JPEG encoding is performed and the result thereof is temporarily stored in a JPEG buffer. Then, the region of an encoding object is replaced by a predetermined value, and run length encoding is performed. When encoding of one raster unit has been completed (S1410), if the encoding object is a first raster unit, the only thing to do is to output the run length encoding data (YES in S1412 and S1413). On the other hand, encoding of a second or succeeding raster unit has been completed subsequently to an output of the ith run length encoding data (S1412), the (i-1)th JPEG encoding result is outputted (S1414). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
