A filter system (1) having a light beam generator (19) to generate a plurality of light beams which are then received by a multi-cavity optical substrate (22). Light beams (21) in the multi-cavity optical substrate (22) are propagated and delayed therein. Defractive optical elements (19) steer the light beams within the cavities of the multi-cavity optical substrate (22). Samples of the light beams from the multi-cavity optical substrate (22) are detected by a photoreceiver array (20). The photoreceiver array (20) generates output electrical signals corresponding to the delayed samples of the light beams (21).
