PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the reliability of a safety mechanism in a rectangular non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery by preventing battery breakage, fire or the other trouble caused by malfunctions such as a short circuit, overcharging, and reverse charging. SOLUTION: The rectangular non-aqueous electrolyte battery comprises a rectangular case for housing an electrode plate group, a sealing plate with a safety valve for sealing the opening of the rectangular case, a rivet arranged on the sealing plate for also acting as a terminal, and an insulation gasket of a resin for insulating the sealing plate and the rivet. The sealing plate is made of a clad plate with one surface of a sheet type cover plate having metal foil press-attached thereto. The safety valve of the sealing plate is formed in a manner that only the lower portion of a hole for the safety valve provided in the cover plate is covered with the metal foil or the entire area of the lower surface of the cover plate is covered with the metal foil. The rectangular case and the sealing plate are laser welded. The circumference of a hole formed at the center of the sealing plate for inserting the rivet is recessed in a groove shape.
