PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ribbon takeup device for a thermal transfer printer, which solves a problem of difference in printing length due to influence of takeup force of an ink ribbon R, as much as possible, can adjust the takeup speed of the ink ribbon R, and can suppress printing elongation on printing paper L to a possible minimum range even when there is a change in a winding diameter. SOLUTION: The ribbon takeup device is designed so as to control the takeup speed according to a takeup diameter of the ink ribbon R, and has a torque limiter 17 arranged between a takeup driving shaft 15 for driving a takeup shaft 18 for rotation and the takeup shaft 18; a takeup shaft driving motor 22 for driving the takeup driving shaft 15 independently from a platen driving motor 7; a ribbon diameter detector 23 for detecting the takeup diameter of the ink ribbon R; and a control section 24 for controlling the rotational speed of the takeup shaft driving motor 22 according to the takeup diameter of the ink ribbon R.
