PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lubricating oil base oil for an internal combustion engine having a relatively low viscosity at a low temperature and suffering from a small change in shear viscosity relative to changes in temperature. SOLUTION: The lubricating oil base oil for the internal combustion engine comprises a polyalkylene glycol diester obtained from a compound represented by formula (1): HO-(AO)<SB>n</SB>-H (wherein A is a 2-4C alkylene group; and n is an integer of 2-10) and a 3-12C carboxylic acid.
