The bendix (10) on an electric starter motor is provided with a rotating output shaft (18) and a torsionally-elastic device (28), arranged between the pinion (12) and the automatically-disengaging torque transmission device, such as a conical clutch or freewheel (14), for storage of energy during the compression phases of the thermal engine and for restoration thereof during the decompression phases. The torsionally-elastic device (28) is axially offset with regard to the automatically-disengaging torque transmission device. Said device (28) guarantees adjustment of the play in the transmission elements, whilst reducing the noise level of the bendix during the starting of an internal combustion engine on a motor vehicle.
