A gas sensor (10A) comprises a protective cover (14) surrounding a sensor element (12). The protective cover includes an outer protective cover (18) containing a number of outer gas inlet holes (34), and covering an inner protective cover (16); and an intermediate protective cover (20) between inner and outer protective covers. The inner protective cover includes a number of inner gas inlet holes (22) and at least one inner gas discharge hole (24). The intermediate protective cover has at least intermediate gas inlet holes (32) that do not face inner/outer gas inlet holes.
