1,145,545. Extruding reinforced tubes. SOC. INDUSTRIELLE DES SILICONES. 19 June, 1967 [22 Dec., 1966], No. 28199/67. Heading B5A. Apparatus for sheathing a glass fibre tubular braiding 1 with plastics or an elastomer, e.g. a silicone elastomer, to form a reinforced tube, comprises a freely rotatable drum 2 supplying the braiding, a ball 3 seating on a conical face of a retainer ring 5, a pair of driven feed rolls 6, 6a and a cross- or inclined head 8 of an extruder which comprises a two-part mandrel 9, 10, the mandrel 10 and ball 3 being connected by a piano wire, cable or rod 4 so that the mandrel 10 is maintained on a level with the orifice and the braiding being coated as it passes therethrough. The relative speeds of the rolls 6, 6a and a haul-off mechanism (not shown) are adjusted to give uniform feed, and the braiding is allowed to ruck up prior to its entry into the head 8 so that it is not under any tension other than that required to pull it thereinto. The ring 5 has a tapered bore for passage of the braiding, the diameter being smaller where the braiding enters than where it exists, while the mandrel 10 is of less diameter than the braiding and its ends are machined to have a smooth finish, and are preferably of a hemispherical shape, though they may be frusto-conical. A tunnel heater (not shown) may be positioned adjacent the orifice 11 to heat the sheathed braiding. The rims of rolls 6, 6a may be coated with pliable plastics sheaths 7, 7a. |
