PURPOSE: A method for managing a file system in an optical disk device is provided to read a file system recorded in an optical disk, and to store/manage the read file system in a non-volatile memory within an optical disk device. CONSTITUTION: A microcomputer retrieves disk ID information included in a lead-in area(S10), and compares/confirms whether the retrieved disk ID information is prestored in a non-volatile memory(S11). If not, the microcomputer reads a file system, and stores the file system with the disk ID information(S12). The microcomputer sets a current operational mode to a data reproducing or recording mode(S13). The microcomputer searches/reproduces a specific data file, or normally reproduces/records a series of data(S17). When the data reproducing or the recording is terminated(S17), the microcomputer updates/records the file system stored/managed in the non-volatile memory(S18).
