PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for producing a bis(methoxymethyl)biphenyl by which bis(methoxy)biphenyls other than the 4,4'-form are synthesized without generating a large amount of metal waste and with giving little load to the environment. SOLUTION: The method for producing the bis(methoxymethyl)biphenyl expressed by general formula (2) is to react a methoxymethyl halogenated benzene expressed by general formula (1) (wherein X expresses a halogen atom) in the presence of a palladium-based catalyst or a rhodium-based catalyst, alcohol or formic acid or its salt, and a base. The method for producing the bis(methoxymethyl)biphenyl is new and can synthesize bis(methoxymethyl)biphenyls other than the 4, 4'-form. The method is applicable to simple industrial production of various bis(methoxymethyl)biphenyls, economical and easily operated, and generates little metal waste and gives little load to the environment.
