PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine whether a vehicle is in a normal travelling state or a sudden slowdown state when brake down shift is performed to increase change gear ratio of a transmission according to braking operation, then released by stepping on an accelerator pedal and easing up on the pedal. SOLUTION: An accelerator opening increase speed is reduced to a prescribed first negative value or below after the opening exceeds a prescribed value, thus starting release of the shift. When the increase speed is reduced to a prescribed second negative value or below thereafter, which is smaller than the first one, the release is stopped and the brake down shift is restarted.
