PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device enabling a photographer to set the size of a focus detecting area previously before photographing, switch the size of two focus detecting areas by one switch without requiring extra labor during photographing, consequently, switch the focus detecting area at high speed and concentrate on other operation. SOLUTION: The optical device provided with an image pickup means, a video signal processing means, an AF evaluation means, a driving means, a central processing means, and an object distance detection means is provided with a focus detecting area size setting means for setting the size of the focus detecting area in a photographic area in setting the focus detecting area, and an operation means for performing 1st operation and 2nd operation for switching the size of the focus detecting area.
