The aim of the invention is to optimize the ventilation of refuse receptacles. To this end, the invention provides that a sensor (13) is placed inside a refuse receptacle (3) and serves to detect fermentation gases, water vapor or the like. The sensor signal is used in turn to regulate or control a fan (12) that withdraws gases and vapors from the refuse receptacle. A manual control of the ventilator by specifying the desired operating time is also conceivable.
