PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for creating the summary of an aesthetically preferable visual image from an aggregate of images. SOLUTION: In this method, the minimum oblong shape is inputted, the entire region of a layout is inputted as an integral multiple of the width and the height of the minimum oblong shape; and the maximum acceptable oblong shape is inputted as an integral multiple of the width and the height of the minimum oblong shape. In this layout method, when at least one of a plurality of oblong shapes is present, the layout comprising a plurality of inputted oblong shapes is created by changing sizes of some of the oblong shapes inputted so as to cover the inputted entire region without superimposing a plurality of the oblong shapes on one another to sizes relative to the minimum shape and smaller than the maximum acceptable oblong shape. When such a plurality of the oblong shapes are not present at all, an entire region similar to the inputted entire region wherein such a combination is present is found out, and the layout method is applied to the region.
