PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily perform restart and reset after replacement of a controller.

SOLUTION: A method for operating a device for controlling and/or monitoring a manufacturing and/or packaging facility on a bus 33 is described in detail and the controller 30 is provided with an interface 34 to be connected with the bus 33, a main memory 36 for storage of a control program 31 and a means for performing the control program 31. Setting data 40 are stored in a detachable memory module 39. When the controller 30 is restarted, the setting data 40 are read, access to a remote memory 32 accessible via the bus 33 is performed by using the setting data 40 and the access includes transfer of data stored in the remote memory 32 to the controller 30.
