PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which is capable of preventing the occurrence of toner filming and obtaining a stable picture quality without defect over a long period, and is friendly also to milieu. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises image carriers, charging means that charge the surfaces of the image carriers, exposure means that form electrostatic latent images on the surfaces of the image carriers charged by the charging means in accordance with image information, development means that develop the electrostatic latent images by using spherical toners and form toner images, first transfer means that transfer the toner images electrostatically from the surfaces of the image carriers to the surface of an intermediate transfer body and a second transfer means that transfers electrostatically the toner images from the surface of the intermediate transfer body to transfer material. Therein, the rate of change Tt of the shape of deformed toner particles existing on the surface of the intermediate transfer body until attaining abutting parts between the intermediate transfer body and the transfer body after passing through abutting parts between the intermediate transfer body and the image carriers is within the range of 50-100%.
