PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling a dehydrative polycondensation reaction, by which a non-stationary operation state can safely and effectively be prevented or stopped in a process for producing a polymer by the polycondensation reaction accompanied by the dehydration, and to provide an apparatus used for the method. SOLUTION: This method for controlling the dehydrative polycondensation reaction is characterized by charging a prescribed amount of water into a reactor in a process for producing the polymer by a dehydrative polycondensation reaction such as a reaction for producing a phenol aralkyl resin represented by the general formula (1) to prevent the occurrence of a non-stationary state or stop the non-stationary state in the production process. The charging of the water into the reactor 10 is judged on the basis of measurement results such as the inner temperature in the reaction 10, the temperature, flow volume or flow rate of a cooling medium in a reflux condenser, the flow volume or flow rate of water discharged out from the reactor or a reaction solvent returned to the reactor 10.
