PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bidirectional, automatic operating device for an escalator at low cost, with a long lifetime, and assuring a high reliability. SOLUTION: The operating device is equipped with passenger sensors 4 and 5 installed in the neighborhood of the top and bottom of the escalator 1, display devices 6 and 7 installed between the sensors 4 and 5 and the top and bottom of the escalator 1, respectively, and a control device to make a drive control of the escalator 1 and the display devices 6 and 7 in response to the sensing operations of the sensors 4 and 5. The control device starts a time-limited counting motion for the specified period from the time when either of the sensors has sensed a passenger while the escalator 1 is at a standstill, operates the escalator 1 from the top or bottom to the other for the specified period from sensing the passenger, and displays the unavailable condition on the other display device.
