PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display device which can display an image of high contrast in spite of easy manufacturing. SOLUTION: The projection display device is constituted so as to separate the light from a light source 1 by a color separation prism 20 to three primary color lights, to illuminate three reflection spatial optical modulation elements 24, 25 and 26 respectively through polarization beam splitters 16, 17 and 18 by the three primary color lights and to put together and project the reflected lights from the three elements 24, 25 and 26 by a color combination prism 20.
