PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element of which driving voltage is reduced compared with a conventional one, or the organic electroluminescent element of which emission lifetime is improved. SOLUTION: This electroluminescent element at least contains a 4,4'-biphenylenediamine derivative expressed as a general formula [III] [in the formula, R<SP>10</SP>to R<SP>17</SP>show respectively a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group of the carbon number 1 to 6, or an alkoxy group or a phenyl group which may be mutually the same or different, and R<SP>10</SP>and R<SP>11</SP>, R<SP>11</SP>and R<SP>13</SP>, R<SP>12</SP>and R<SP>13</SP>, R<SP>14</SP>and R<SP>15</SP>, R<SP>15</SP>and R<SP>17</SP>and R<SP>16</SP>and R<SP>17</SP>may form a ring by being bonded together] as a positive hole transport layer material in a positive hole transport layer of a plurally-layered structure.
