PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet sensing device and a sheet handling device using it capable of sensing the sheet edge accurately even with a tab sheet while the cost is suppressed. SOLUTION: The sheet sensing device is structured so that three or more sensors (2a-2c in the attached illustration) are installed in isolation in a sheet transport path 1 capable of transporting a tab sheet S in such an arrangement that they lie approximately on one straight line in the direction perpendicular to the sheet transporting direction, wherein a predetermined reference number A of sensors 2 (2a-2c in the attached illustration) are installed in such a way as mating with the whole or a part of of the tab Tb position of the tab sheet S planned to be used, and the relation B>A should be met, where B is the number of sensors 2 installed mating with the region other than the tab Tb of each tab sheet S, while an edge judging device 3 can sense the edges other than the tab Tb of the tab sheet S as sheet edge on the basis of the signals given by the sensors 2.
