Electronic device password information for both an, electronic device and a smart card are stored on the electronic device. When a user attempts to access the electronic device, the user is prompted to enter a password. If the password information for the electronic device matches the password information for the smart card, the entered password is echoed in both an electronic device password entry field and a smart card password entry field on a display screen on the electronic device, checked against the password information for the electronic device, and transferred to the smart card for password checking by the smart card. In this way a user must have access to the correct smart card for a given device and the correct password.
