Process for measurement of the shrinkage of individual fibers (IF)(10) by measurement of the longitudinal alteration of the IF before and after shrinkage relieving heat treatment, involving conversion of an IF to the stress-free or low stress state, optical measurement of the IF length prior to heat treatment, heat treatment of the IF specimen, measurement of the IF length after heat treatment, and calculation of the IF shrinkage from the optical data. An independent claim is included for a device for shrinkage measurement of IF including heat treatment device (2), optical measurement device (4) for measuring the IF length change, and a calculator (6) for evaluating the measurement data.
