Determination of degradation of vehicle exhaust pressure sensor

A method is described for controlling regeneration of a diesel particulate filter of an exhaust system of a vehicle engine based on at least a sensor, such as a differential pressure sensor or a temperature sensor. Degradation of the sensor is then detected in a variety of ways. One approach takes advantage of the slowly varying flow resistance of the filter compared with the more rapid variations in flow caused by changing engine conditions. Default operation is then taken when a degraded sensor is detected. The filter may be coupled to an oxidation catalyst or a NOx adsorber. The system includes a computer storage medium with means for regenerating the particulate filter based on the sensor. Also disclosed is a routine for controlling injection of a reductant into the catalyst.
