Method for treating a cardboard web

In a process to modify the print characteristics of a carton web, the web (2) is calandered in a wide nip (5) to a micro-roughness of no more than 6 m. The web is subject to a further calander process between the wide nip and first-stage coating process (19). The carton web is moistened prior to the wide nip (5). While passing through the wide nip the carton is heated to at lease 100C. Prior to the wide nip a bonding agent is applied to the carton web surface, bringing the carton COBB liquid absorption capacity to no more than 50 g H2O/m in a period of 60 s on a surface area of 100 cm. The bonding agent is applied in a continuous process. The carton is subsequently coated using ink or dye of 15 g/m or more and having a water retention value of 50 to 80 s. The nip (15) is formed by the interface between a hard surface and a soft surface.
