PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a variety of adverse effects caused by accidental fire of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: When misfire occurs, air-fuel mixture is confined in a combustion chamber and burned at the next cycle. At this time, the amount of air-fuel mixture leaking from the combustion chamber during the misfiring cycle is detected to make up for the leaked amount. By so doing, while preventing drop in fuel consumption rate and deterioration of purifying catalysts due to an accidental fire, the reliable burning can be achieved in the next cycle. Instead of confinement of the air-fuel mixture, EGR can be carried out. In this case, the EGR rate is appropriately controlled, thereby minimizing combustion fluctuation due to fluctuation of the air-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber caused by a return of accidental firing air-fuel mixture and early deterioration of catalysts due to flow of residual air-fuel mixture into catalysts.
