PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high-purity diphenyl ether monosulfonic acid (DPES) by simple operation under a mild condition in a high yield. SOLUTION: In this method for producing the diphenyl ether monosulfonic acid represented by formula (1) by which a reaction is carried out while adding chlorosulfonic acid to diphenyl ether, the reaction is performed in a state in which at least one selected from a hydrogen halide gas, oxygen gas, carbon dioxide gas and nitrogen gas is dissolved in the diphenol ether.
