PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader in which a wire is hardly curled when stopping for a long time and excludes an influence of curl of the wire even when the wire has tendency of curl. SOLUTION: An area outside home position sensor 21 for stopping a first running body A on the outside of a document area and an area inside home position sensor 22 for stopping the first running body A on the inside of the document area are included. An ADF 10 being a platen cover is provided with an open/close detection sensor 17, and the running body is stopped at a home position in the document area by the area inside home position sensor 22 when the open/close detection sensor 17 detects opening of the platen cover, and the running body is stopped at a home position on the outside of the document area by the area outside home position sensor 21 when the open/close detection sensor 17 detects closing of the platen cover. Even when the wire has tendency of curl, it is all that oscillation or the like occurs on the running body on the outside of the document area, so that an influence upon image read can be prevented.
