PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp lighting device with at least two chopper circuits to be connected in parallel to the output end of a DC power supply, preventing a current flowing in inductors of all chopper circuits from moving into a continuous mode, and to provide a lighting system therewith. SOLUTION: A control circuit 5 controls a first switching element Qa by detecting at least a current flowing in the first inductor La of the first chopper circuit 2a. The second chopper circuit 2b controls a second switching element Qb without detecting a current flowing in the second inductor Lb and also controls the second switching element Qb so that there is a time for the current flowing in the second inductor Lb to be zero periodically.
