PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of purifying a composition containing carbon nanotubes by which impurities are removed from the composition containing the carbon nanotubes and the carbon nanotubes having excellent heat resistance, mechanical strength and conductivity are obtained while suppressing the formation of aggregate of the carbon nanotube. SOLUTION: The impurities are removed by bringing an alkaline aqueous solution into contact with the composition containing the carbon nanotubes, and the carbon nanotubes having heat resistance, mechanical strength and conductivity are obtained while suppressing the formation of the nanotube aggregate. The method includes (1) a process for bringing the alkaline aqueous solution into contact with the composition containing the carbon nanotubes and subjecting a component containing the carbon nanotubes to solid-liquid separation, (2) a process for bringing an acidic aqueous solution into contact with the composition and subjecting a component containing the carbon nanotubes to solid-liquid separation, and (3) a process for bringing oxygen into contact with the composition under a high temperature condition of 200 to 800°C.
