A carrier layer(10) and decorative layer(11) are brought into contact and the carrier layer heated in a specific area(13) using hot air. The decorative layer is then turned over the edge(12) of the carrier layer and joined to the heated area of the carrier layer. The carrier layer(10) is heated until the surface is at least partly molten. A turn-over tool(17), preferably a slide, is used to turn the decorative layer(11) through 180[deg] onto the back of the carrier layer so that it covers not only the edge(12) but part of the rear face. Folds(16) of the decorative layer are pressed onto the molten surface of the carrier layer and held for a period to ensure the two layers grip into each other. The turn-over slide has a profile adapted to the shape of carrier layer and decoartive material in the joining area. Independent claims are made for: a) a component comprising a plastic carrier layer and a decorative layer, the latter being turned around an edge of the former and joined to it using the claimed process; b) a product for use inside a motor vehicle and comprising the claimed component.
