A method to control the movement of a shift rail (34) in an automatic gear transmission system (14), wherein each shift rail (34) is connected to an associated actuator (40). The method comprises controlling the actuation of an actuator using an electrical control signal, so that when a first electrical control signal (e.g. Imax) is sent to a first of said actuators to actuate the first of said actuators, a second electrical control signal (I0) is sent to the other actuator(s) to cause the other actuator(s) to be locked in position.
